Dowels that cannot be knocked all the way in are sawn off so that the cut is flush with the trunk. Note: Opinions are divided as to whether the use of a dowel is optimal for the tree. Certain studies indicate that this can promote fungal attack. Without a dowel, however, the tree will undoubtedly bleed quite a lot before it heals itself.
